An air vent head, also called an air pipe head, caps the open end of a tank vent pipe on deck. As a tank is filled, displaced air escapes through the head, and as it is pumped out, air is drawn back in to prevent vacuum. Inside the casing a float, usually a ball or flat disc, rises and seals the opening when seawater floods the deck, then drops back to open as the water clears. Load Line rules require automatic closing devices of this type on exposed vent pipes.
