A flange with a long tapered hub that is butt welded to the pipe. The taper spreads stress from the bolted joint into the pipe wall, so weld necks are the first choice for high pressure, high temperature and cyclic service.

A welding neck flange has a long tapered hub ending in a bevel that matches the pipe OD and wall thickness. It is joined to the pipe with a full penetration butt weld, which can be radiographed, and the bore lines up with the pipe so flow is not disturbed. The gradual taper carries bending and thermal stress away from the flange ring, which is why weld necks are used on steam, oil and gas, and high pressure hydraulic lines.
