A backing ring is a loose flange used with a stub end (also called a flange adaptor). The stub end is fused or welded to the pipe and provides the sealing face, while the backing ring slides behind its collar and carries the bolts. Because the ring rotates freely, bolt holes line up without twisting the pipe, and the ring itself stays out of contact with the fluid. This is the standard way to flange HDPE, PVC and PP pipes.
