A brass gate valve closes a line by lowering a wedge-shaped disc across the flow path. Turning the handwheel drives the stem through several turns, so the valve opens and closes gently and does not cause water hammer the way a quarter-turn valve can on a long line. When fully open the gate lifts clear of the bore, giving a straight, low-resistance flow path that suits gravity tanks and pump suction.
