A lap joint flange works with a stub end that is butt welded to the pipe. The flange slides over the pipe and bears against the back of the stub end lap; only the stub end touches the fluid. The bore has a radius at the face to fit the stub end fillet. Because the flange can rotate, bolt holes line up easily, which helps on large lines and on systems that are dismantled often for cleaning or inspection.
