A hex nut to ISO 4032 or DIN 934 is the everyday nut for metric bolts and studs. The nut property class should match the bolt, so a class 8 nut suits an 8.8 bolt. A castle nut to DIN 935 is taller, with six slots on top. After tightening, a split pin is passed through a slot and a cross hole in the bolt, so the nut cannot turn even if preload is lost. Castle nuts are used where safety depends on the nut staying put.
