An aluminium welding neck flange has a long tapered hub that is butt welded to aluminium pipe of the same wall thickness. Moving the weld away from the flange ring means the heat-affected zone sits in the hub, not under the bolt load, and the weld can be inspected. Aluminium keeps its toughness at very low temperatures, so welded aluminium flanges are found on cold gas lines as well as on ship and offshore piping.
