A fire hose coupling lets fire hose be connected in seconds under pressure. The instantaneous pattern to BS 336 uses a male coupling that pushes into a female coupling and locks with spring-loaded lugs, released by pulling a ring or sleeve. Storz couplings are symmetrical, with no male or female: two identical heads engage claws and lock with a quarter turn. Couplings are fitted to the hose with a binding wire or clamp over the serrated tail.
