A spiral wound gasket is made by winding a pre-formed V-section metal strip together with a soft filler, usually flexible graphite or PTFE. The winding acts as a spring, so the gasket recovers when flanges move with temperature and pressure cycles. A carbon steel outer centring ring locates the gasket in the bolts and limits compression, and an inner ring protects the winding from turbulence and stops it buckling into the bore.
