A hex head bushing screws into a female port and presents a smaller female thread for the next connection, making it the most compact way to reduce a threaded outlet. The hex lets it be tightened with a ring or open spanner. ASME B16.11 covers hex head and flush bushings and, like plugs, gives them no separate class; they are intended for use within the threaded fittings the standard covers.
