A dowel pin is a precision ground solid cylinder. Fitted into reamed holes in two mating parts, it fixes their position so bolts only provide clamping. Hardened dowels to ISO 8734 are made to an m6 tolerance for an interference or tight fit. A spring pin, also called a roll pin, is a slotted tube to ISO 8752 that is slightly larger than its hole and compresses on installation, so it can go into drilled holes and resists vibration without precise reaming.
