A spectacle blind is two discs joined by a web: one solid paddle and one open spacer ring. It sits between a pair of flanges and is held by the flange bolts. In normal operation the ring is in the line and flow passes through. For maintenance the bolts are loosened, the blind rotated, and the solid side closes the line. Valves can leak; a blind gives positive isolation that permit-to-work systems often require.

In larger sizes, where a single spectacle becomes heavy, separate paddle blanks and spacers are supplied. They are used in refineries, gas plants, tank farms and chemical units.
