A G.I. union consists of two threaded ends and a central nut. One end screws onto each pipe; tightening the nut draws the two halves together on a seat. Flat seat unions (EN 10242 U1) seal with a fibre or rubber gasket, while taper seat unions seal metal to metal with no gasket. Because the nut does the work, the pipework can be separated without unscrewing it, which is why unions are standard next to any equipment that may need removing.
