Type E is a male adapter whose back end is a ribbed hose shank instead of a thread. It is clamped into a hose so that the hose itself presents a male groove. The most common use is building long transfer lines from standard hose lengths: each length gets a Type C at one end and a Type E at the other, so any length plugs into the next.
