A ring type joint gasket is a precision-machined metal ring. When the flanges are bolted up, the ring is forced into trapezoidal grooves in both faces and deforms plastically, creating a metal-to-metal line seal. To work, the ring must be softer than the flange groove, so material and hardness are selected against the flange: soft iron or low carbon steel for carbon steel flanges, stainless for stainless flanges.
