A wedge anchor (through bolt) is a threaded stud with an expansion clip at its tip. It is pushed through the fixture into a hole of the same diameter, and tightening the nut pulls a cone into the clip, which grips the concrete. Sleeve anchors expand a full-length sleeve and suit brick and block as well as concrete; drop-in anchors sit flush and take a bolt or threaded rod from below, ideal for overhead hangers. Cast-in J and L foundation bolts are set in fresh concrete.
