A G.I. plug is a short solid fitting with a taper male thread and a square or hexagon head. It screws into a female-threaded outlet such as a tee branch, socket, elbow or valve body to close it. Because the male taper wedges into the female thread, a plug with PTFE tape or sealant gives a pressure-tight seal that can be removed later to extend the line or drain it. It is the male counterpart of a cap.
