An aluminium slip-on flange is the light alloy equivalent of the steel SORF. The aluminium pipe slides into the bore and is TIG or MIG welded with a matching filler. Aluminium forms a natural oxide layer that resists atmospheric and sea air corrosion, and the parts are roughly one-third the weight of steel. Strength falls quickly with temperature and after welding, so aluminium flanges are used at moderate pressure and ambient temperature.
