A 45 degree elbow changes direction by half a right angle. In grooved systems it is mostly used in pairs to create an offset, stepping a main around a beam, a duct or another service, and for angled branch connections. The gentler turn causes noticeably less friction loss than a 90, which helps when a fire main or chilled water line is already near its pressure budget.
