An aluminium threaded flange has a taper pipe thread through its bore, so it screws onto threaded pipe without welding. This matters with aluminium, because welding needs specialist equipment and reduces the strength of the alloy near the joint. Aluminium threads are softer than steel, so tightening should be moderate and an anti-seize or PTFE sealant is recommended to prevent galling, particularly when mating with stainless or steel nipples.
