An API adapter is fitted to each compartment outlet of a petroleum road tanker. It carries the 4" API RP 1004 interface, a machined profile that the loading arm coupler grips and seals against. Most designs include an internal poppet that stays closed until the coupler is attached and its handle is operated, keeping product inside the compartment and limiting spills when the arm is disconnected.
