An emergency shut-off valve, often called a quick-closing valve, is a globe-type valve held open against a strong spring by a latch. Pulling a remote wire, or sending an air signal to a small piston, releases the latch and the spring slams the valve shut in a fraction of a second. On ships and in generator rooms this lets fuel and lube oil tanks be isolated from outside the burning space, cutting the fuel supply to a fire without anyone approaching the tank.
