A foot valve sits on the end of a pump suction pipe, submerged in a tank, sump or well. Inside the brass body a spring-loaded disc opens when the pump draws water and snaps shut when it stops, so the column of water in the suction line cannot drain back. That keeps the pump primed for the next start. The stainless steel strainer around the inlet keeps out leaves, stones and larger debris that would damage the impeller.

They are used on centrifugal pumps lifting from underground tanks, wells and irrigation ponds, on fire pump tank suctions where applicable, and on dewatering pumps.
