A safety relief valve is the last line of protection against over-pressure. A calibrated spring holds a disc on the inlet seat; when pressure under the disc overcomes the spring force at the set pressure, the valve lifts and discharges until pressure drops back and the spring reseats it. Safety valves on compressible media such as air and steam pop open fully, while relief valves on liquids open in proportion to over-pressure. A test lever lets operators check the valve is free.
