A threaded boss is a short, thick forged collar tapped with an NPT thread. It is welded to the outside of a pipe, tank or vessel over a drilled hole, and its heavy section supports the threads against the load of a thermowell or gauge. Bosses are made to manufacturer standard, with threads to ASME B1.20.1, and are supplied with a flat base or one contoured to a particular pipe size.
