A forged cap with a female NPT thread that screws onto the threaded end of a pipe or nipple. It closes the line in a way that can be removed later for cleaning, draining or extension, with no welding needed.

A forged threaded cap fits over a male pipe thread and closes the end. Where a plug closes a female port, a cap closes a male one, so the choice depends on what is at the end of the line. Caps to ASME B16.11 are forged from A105 and carry class 2000 and 3000 ratings, giving a much stronger closure than malleable iron caps. The flat or slightly domed crown can be drilled for a gauge if required.

They are used on drain and blow-down nipples, the ends of temporary lines, hydraulic test stubs and spare branches on air and water headers.
