A threaded half coupling is welded onto the outside of a header or shell over a drilled hole, and its female NPT thread then accepts a gauge, plug, thermowell, valve or nipple. It is one of the most common ways to add small screwed connections to tanks and pipe, especially during fabrication. Because it is a straight sleeve, its reinforcement is limited, so specifications usually restrict it to small branches.
