A forged three-piece union with female NPT ends that lets a screwed line be disconnected without unscrewing the whole run. A hex nut draws two ground steel seats together to form a reusable metal-to-metal seal.

In a screwed system every joint is made by turning, so without a threaded union a valve or meter in the middle of a run cannot be removed without dismantling everything from one end. The union solves this: its male and female ends screw onto the pipes, and the loose nut joins them along a ground seat. MSS SP-83 sets the dimensions and the class 3000 and 6000 ratings for forged steel unions.
