A forged, reinforced outlet that welds onto a run pipe and presents a bevelled branch for butt welding the branch pipe. It gives a full-bore, full-strength 90 degree branch without cutting the header for a tee.

A butt weld branch outlet is the welded-branch member of the MSS SP-97 family. Its contoured base is groove welded to the header, and its top is bevelled to 37.5 degrees to butt weld the branch pipe. Unlike socket and threaded outlets, which are rated by class, butt weld outlets are specified by the branch pipe schedule, so the bore and wall match the connecting pipe. The best-known trade name for this fitting is weldolet.
