A forged sleeve tapped with female NPT threads at both ends to join two threaded pipes in line. It is the screwed counterpart of the socket weld coupling and is made to the same B16.11 class ratings.

A forged threaded coupling joins two male-threaded pipe ends. Its female NPT threads are cut from each end toward the middle, and forged couplings to ASME B16.11 have a far heavier wall than merchant or malleable iron couplings, so they hold class 2000 and 3000 ratings. They are also welded onto tanks and pipes as screwed nozzles when a half coupling is not long enough.
